The History of First Baptist Church

1924BLDG

Established in 1924, First Baptist Church is located in the heart of Silver Spring Maryland. First Baptist is an urban church rich in cultural diversity. The mission statement of the church is "Sharing God's Love in the Heart of the City."

Beginning in December 2013, the current building on the corner of Wayne and Fenton Streets will be torn down and rebuilt on a site just south of the current location. For the next two years, the church will be meeting in the Takoma Park Community Center located at 7500 Maple Ave., Takoma Park MD 20912.

This rich cultural diversity allows First Baptist to provide space for worship services in English, Spanish, and French Creole. Bible Study is also available for all three congregations (English, French for Adults, and Spanish speaking participants). Please check the church calendar for Worship and Bible Study times.

Since its early days, First Baptist has had a strong tradition of community service. In 1968, the church established a weekday Child Development Center and Bible Study classes for mentally challenged adults. Both of these programs still continue today. In 1968, First Baptist offered one of its properties to house the Shepherd's Table, a multi-denominational service providing food, clothing, and social services for the areas homeless and hungry. As this service grew, it was relocated to Progress Place several blocks away. First Baptist also provides a weekly Food Closet to supplement local individuals and their families.

Other Mission projects undertaken by the joint congregations include Vacation Bible School, Young Adults, Women in Action and Angel Tree.
